Many patients wonder if the radiation they receive from dental x-rays is harmful. The answer is no.
Modern digital x-rays emit 90 percent less radiation than traditional films taken in the past. This means you actually receive more radiation from the sun outside on a sunny day, making dental x-rays extremely safe.
Dental x-rays also play an integral role in helping Dr. Pascal diagnose his patients properly because they allow an internal view that is not available to the naked eye. This allows early diagnosis of problems like gum disease, tooth decay, and dental cysts.
X-rays are also helpful in planning procedures like dental implant placement, root canal treatment, and tooth extraction. Dr. Pascal may also take an x-ray of a specific tooth for diagnosis when a patient is experiencing pain or a dental emergency.
We recommend one set of bitewing x-rays be taken each year as a baseline for your dental health. In addition, one panoramic x-ray that gives a complete view of your teeth and jawbone should be updated every five years.
